Carpet Care

How To Care For Your Carpet

Because of the tremendous skill involved in their creation, combined with wool's extremely high wearing qualities and stain resistance, proper care and cleaning will ensure many years of continued enjoyment from your new carpet.

The single most destructive element to your area carpet is not the action of smooth-soled shoes, but it is grit - rough, hard particles of dirt, which are tracked into the house from outdoors, and sift into the roots of the wool nap.  When you walk on a rug, this grit cuts against the strands of the wool and severs small pieces of the pile.  Removing shoes and wearing slippers is not always practical or possible.  Fortunately, there are other remedies workth considering:

VACUUMING: Light vacuuming should be done regularly to prevent the destructive grit action described above.  A thorough vacuuming should be done once a week.  You should vacuum against the direction of the pile to agitate the fine particles which have worked their way down between the woolen tufts.  The hand-tied knots of a genuine carpet are firmly in place and can not be loosened or removed by a vacuum cleaner.

Some initial shedding can be expected in new carpets.  This is normal and will subside with regular use and carpet care.

WASHING: Bits of grit sometimes become so deeply embedded that household vacuuming no longer yields any positive results.  A professional cleaning will remove this dirt, along with the normal soiling that gradually dulls a carpet.

SPILLS: Whenever possible, clean a spill immediately, before it has a chance to set.  First, scrape up any solid material or soak up excess liquid with a paper towel.  Next, spot clean with a mild solution of soap, water, and a touch of white vinegar.  Use as much of the suds and a little of the water as possible.  Many long-time carpet owners have reported good success using a laundry soap normally used for wool clothing products as the soap in the solution.  To dry, elevate the dampened spot to allow sufficient air flow.

PADDING: Padding should be placed under all carpets.  The thicker the area carpet, the thinner the pad, is a general recommendation.  Proper padding is important as it muffles noise, protects the carpet from excess wear, prevents if from moving, and makes it even more luxurious to walk on.  Selecting the right pad for your carpet is important.  It should not be more than half an inch thick and should be a pad specifically designed for hand-knotted rugs.  Please speak to one of our professional staff in selecting the correct underpad.

PROFESSIONAL CLEANING: We recommend professional cleaning of your area carpets only as needed.  High traffic areas should be done more frequently than low usage areas.  Again, please consult with your professionals.
